A Welcome From Your New Captain
Many
years ago a promising and possibly angelic 11 year old boy took his
first eager steps onto the hallowed blasé of Clarkston Tennis Club. On
his feet were a pair of Dunlop Amber Flash. In his hand a new Slazenger
racket (with terry towelling grip) and in his head was a dream to one
day make it to the top. 26 years on, as I accept the
privileged
of being the next Tennis Captain, that 10 year old’s dream has come
true.
Joking aside, like many here tonight, Clarkston Tennis
Club has been one of the most significant & consistent aspects
in
my life so far. Whilst my game may not be that much better than it was
all those years ago the club, for better or worse, had a significant
contribution in moulding the person I am today. I have met
lifelong friends, snogged countless women at Christmas Eve parties,
enjoyed my first legal beers, held my 21st and will more than likely be
the venue for my 40th Birthday.
Having given me so many
opportunities over the past 25 years I feel that it is only right that
I should make my contribution to the club and am immensely proud to be
entrusted with the position of Tennis Captain. Also failing
some
illness that wipes out most of the gents section it is the only way I
will get my name on the honours board behind me.
Over the
past 12 month I have had the chance as Vice Captain to get to
understand how the club is run and see what I would like to achieve as
Captain. This time has been invaluable and I am delighted that Sharon
Mitchell as agreed to take on the role of Captain. Having already
proved a winning partnership on the Tennis Courts with two Mixed
Doubles titles I am already looking forward to having Sharon beneath me
this year. Seriously though having a VC means that the club
will
have some continuity for the next 2-3 years which is vital if we are to
continue developing and growing the club.
As Captain I do
not see my role as being the person who organises every
activity. Like many of you I have a fulltime job
and full
time family which makes my free time for the club limited. Similarly I
do not expect those people who have taken on roles within the committee
to burden themselves with the roles by trying to do everything
themselves.
Either I or the committee makes the club or runs
the club. Whilst we can facilitate what happens the club
itself
lives or dies from the contribution of its members. Whether it is
managing the tennis balls like Ian or running a club function
like Justin, Going on the opening rota like Alan or arranging an over
60’s tournament like Pat we all have a part to play in ensuring the
future of our club. As we go forward I hope that we can extend the
helping hands beyond those who have already given so much. This
contribution need not be huge but so all I ask is that if you are asked
by the committee to help out with something you that you give it some
consideration.
The Tennis section has much to be optimistic
about: we have a good committee, positive court development
plans, a growing membership and through Clubmark the structure on which
to build a realistic future. This is a good club to be a
member
of and I hope that during the next year more people will get the chance
to realise this.
Many thanks again for entrusting me with this position.

Alan Scott Memorial Tournament
2010
Saturday
saw 16 hardy souls brave blustery and changeable conditions to
participate in the 6th Annual Alan Scott Memorial. Following
the
usual competitive, yet social, format the players fought for a chance
to lift the coveted shield at the end of the afternoon. The
final
was a tight affair with the winners coming out on top by the narrowest
of margins. Pizza and beer afterwards allowed everyone to
mingle
after an afternoon of activity. Competitive tennis and
socialising with friends; two sentiments I am sure Alan would very much
condone!
Prize
Winners:
Overall Champions: Gregg McGeoch & John Slack
Runners-Up: Dave Evans & Errol Hornstein
Iain Coventry "Happy Playing In The Sand" Award: Justin Notley
Best Protection From The Sun Award: John Slack

Message From The Wing Commander
Gentlemen,
As
we have at last arrived at the end of the campaign, I thought it
pertinent to voice my sincerest thanks to each and every member of the
Squadron for their efforts this year. Last night's sortie
at Kilmacolm was typical, with everybody's "kite" slightly
banged
up, we fought valiantly, securing another win for Queen and
Country! The cameraderie this campaign has been magnificent
and a
prime factor in the success earned. This coupled with the
hilarity and japes have made it entirely enjoyable. It is
indeed
an honour to serve with such a fine body of men. Special
mention
must also be given to the reserve Squadron, for bolstering the defences
when called upon. "GI" Hahn and "Mossad" Hornstein served
with
distinction and were a credit to all. Success brings promotion and a
chance to pit ourselves against new "enemies". I know that we
will not be found wanting.

Dylans Delight at Eglestaff Glory
Last
week, Clarkstons ex Gents Tennis champion was beaming following his
wife Susan's emphatic singles title win at the Yonex Scottish National
Badminton Championships. Susan once graced our courts as a promising
junior but having swapped ball for shuttlecocks is now well on her way
to representing her country at the Commonwealth games and hopefully the
2012 Olympics.
All at Clarkston are chuffed to bit for the Eglestaffs and wish Susan
every success in the future. |

What Can Clarkston Do for You?
Since October the new
Tennis
Committee have been focused in trying to
put in place a new coaching structure / alternative fundraising streams
/ Court Redevelopment and means of improving our communication with our
members. In addition to this the committee would also like
to look
at providing our members with more for there membership. In
order to
achieve this we would like to here from you. What would you like to
see?, What could we do better?, what are we not doing?. Our Captain
stated in his Captain's Log the Clarkston B&TC is not like a
David
Lloyd or Cannons Gym but a community club where the input from members
is what makes the club that we are.
All comments are gratefully received and where possible we will try to
action as many as possible.

Noughty Quiz Boost Club Funds
Clarkston Bowling & Tennis Clubs first social event of the year
proved to be a massive success thanks to the support and generosity of
the members. Over 120 of the Clarkstons best minds
battled it out to
be acknowledged as the CB&TC Quiz Team Champions.
Congratulations
must go to Ian Smiths (Scotland for the Grand Slam) Team who triumphed
in a very tightly fought contest.
The success of the night is largly due to those members who managed to
cojole and persuade friends and family to make up a team. Of note I
would like to thank Craig Lowe for drawing in 17 friends and also Joan
McArthur for making up a team from our lady
bowlers . It is always a
delight to have you girls at the quiz and I have asked Mark to
make
sure that next year the questions are all on the 50's/60's and 70's
with no sports round.
These functions don't happen without some effort and
I would like to
pay special thanks to Mark Weir for putting together the
quiz, my
wife Claire for her support in the run up and on the day.
Gregg McGeoch
& Justin Notley for their help on the night and
setting up the
hall. Shona Doodson & Lynne McGeoch for selling all the raffle
tickets. Niall & Alison McLaren, Kevin Drewitt & Shona
Kennedy
for distributing the half time hotdogs/sauces and onions so
professionally. Finally a thank you must do to the people who
generously gave raffle prizes.
I am glad to put on these nights for the club and hope that future
events will be as well supported, possibly even from all sections of
the club.

Clarkston's Coolest Grandparents
Clarkston B&TC are
delighted to share the news that Carol
and Paul Milne have become Grandparents to a
little boy Moss Nelson
Mine. Little Moss was born on the 9th December, 4 weeks early, but
still managed to weigh in at a health 5lb 14ozs. He
also was the first
baby born in the new Glasgow Southern Suite getting
his picture in the
Daily Record. New Parents Bruce & Pamela are overjoyed
with there
new arrival and from the hundreds of pictures on Carols facebook page
it is clear to see why as he is gorgeous. Carol has said that being a
Granny won't change her but we will see how that holds up when a
babysitting request clashes with a tennis match. Congratulations to all
the Milne family we couldn't be happier for you. |

Another
Hogmanay Cracker from Gregg & Lynne McGeoch
This
years Clarkston Bowling & Tennis
Club celebrated Hogmanay in
style with 200+ friends, family and children seeing
in the New Year at
the Clubs annual celebrations. The feedback from the event has shown
the night to be a massive success with many families already looking
forward to next year. The Club funds also benefited by over £1000.
The success
of this night is without question a result of the total
enthusiasm and
attention to detail that Gregg and his wife Lynne put into the event.
From the catering to the decorations Gregg and Lynne commit
a many evening in December and days over the festive
break to ensure
that everybody has a good time and the event is a success for the club.
This commitment can no more be seen by the 1100+
balloons which Gregg and Lynne physically blow up (Lynne tied them all
as Gregg can't manage this task) in order to decorate the hall and
provided a balloon drop at the bells.
The Club owe Gregg and Lynne a massive thank you for there efforts not
just for this event but for the many thousands of pounds which
they
have raised over the past years during Gregg's reign as social
convenor.
Gregg
has asked that we thank those tennis members who
assisted in setting
up the hall and preparing the food. ( Shona Doodson, Iain
Coventry,
Suzanne Mathieson)
To Errol and his partner Pauline for assisting with games and
organisation on the night.
Special thanks also go to Gregg & Lynne, Mark Weir, Katy
McFarlane,
Ross Johnstone, Fraser Hodge and Errol Hornstein for taking
time on New
Years day to tidy the hall in preparation for a private function on the
2nd. |

Floodlight
New Charging
For
those of us who play during the dark nights under the illumination of
the Floodlights the amount of playing time you get for your £1 will
decrease to 30mins. This change has been brought into effect to help
try and recover some of the costs required to run the lights. The
current 40mins has been in place for over 6years during which times we
have seen significant increases in the cost of electricity. |

The Sun Shines on Clarkston
Bowling & Tennis Club As It Celebrates Its Centenary
The club celebrated its Centenary Opening Day on Saturday 11 April 2009.
On
the Tennis side, 23 Past Captains joined in the celebrations, going
back as far as Alastair Fairweather, the Captain in 1950. In
his
short speech the current Captain, Alan McEwan, highlighted the
exceptional success of past member Winnie Shaw, who amongst other
outstanding achievements reached the Quarter Finals of the Wimbledon
Ladies Singles Championship two years in a row (1970 and
1971).
Winnie Shaw is the link between some major milestones in the Tennis
Section history. She returned to the club where she had
learned
her tennis to officially open the all-weather courts in 1987.
Having sadly died in 1992 at the age of 45, her parents - Winifred and
Angus Shaw - formally opened the Tennis Viewing Lounge in her memory in
1997.
The Past Captains lined up to watch Flora Smith (a
former member) serve to officially open the courts for the 2009
season. Flora celebrated her own 100th birthday in April and
so
it was entirely appropriate that she served the club into its second
century. She was gifted with flowers presented by Sarah
McHugh,
one of our young Junior Members.
There followed a social
afternoon which gave past members a chance to renew old acquaintances
and look at displays of old photos and other memorabilia in the
clubhouse.

with a 3 - 2 victory. The final is at Hampden BC. |
| 30th August |
Last
night saw Clarkston secure a semi-final spot in the GBA Five singles
with a comfortable 3 - 1 win in the district final. |
| 27th August |
Ian
Hudson makes it a double as he defeats Iain Hunter in the Presidents
final. It was a scrappy affair with both players struggling
on a difficult rink, however Ian Hudson proved the more consistent and
despite a mid match rally from Iain Hunter secured a comfortable
victory. Ian Hudson now joins a select group of bowlers who
have won the Championship and Presidents in the same year.
(For the record his opponent is one of those members)
In
the under 45's Alan Mitchell defeated Gordon
Andrew 2 - 1 in what is the final year for both players in the Under
45's. I have some reservations as to their eligibility for
this years!
|
| 25th August |
Finals
Day Results:
Ian
Hudson made a successful defence of the
Club Championship by defeating Jim Meechan 21 - 11 in this years
finals. Ian hopes that Championship wins are like buses, you
wait ages for one and suddenly three come at once.
In the
Vice President's final Jack Hurry had a
confident 21 - 12 win over Peter Rutherford, who failed to make it a
family double with his wife having won the Ladies VP Trophy.
It is however a double in the Hurry household with Lois winning the
Ladies Championship earlier this week.
The
nomination pairs saw a narrow win for
Gordon Andrew and Iain Hunter who recovered from a slow start to defeat
Malcolm Burns and Peter Cation in a closely contested match.
The
Murchie Cup was successfully defended by
Ali Shan who had a straight sets win over Russell Graham
coming from 6 - 1 down in the first set.
Ken
"full house" Murchie now has the complete
set of having won every trophy possible by at last winning the Drummond
Trophy with a comfortable win over past winner John Crombie.
It is a unique achievement and one that will probably stand for a few
years yet!

Championship
finalist, Ian Hudson, was the only beaten Clarkston player as the team
progressed to the quarter finals of the GBA Five Singles. |

Have now had the
computer repaired, thanks to Murray Kerr (Secretary of Overton
& Waterloo), can I reclaim costs?
"Summer" is nearly
over
and finals are upon us. This year sees Ian Hudson (defending
champion) take on Jim Meechan (Millenium Champion) and also his
nominated pairs partner in the Championship. In the Vice
Presidents Peter Rutherford, who had the cheek to defeat President John
Harrison in the semi final will now face last years President Jack
Hurry.

Yesterday
saw the inaugural Eastwood Mearns
Taxi's 1-2-3 competition, the sponsorship being obtained through Craig
Milliken. By all accounts everyone enjoyed the day (despite
the weather) and were greatly entertained by Russell Graham who
demonstrated that it is possible to loose a full house nine in the
triples! Russell plays again today in our top ten?
The
honours went to Ian Hudson, Stuart Law and
Jim Britton with Alex Weir, Stewart Martin and Hamish Orr as runners up.
Thanks
to Malcolm McLaren for the update.

This
years SBA finals at Ayr have drawn to a
close. In the singles Clarkston's Ali Shan progressed with a
narrow win to the second round where he was unfortunately between by an
equally narrow margin. The pairs of Russell Graham and Ian
Hudson were narrowly beaten in the 1st round 18 - 15.
Congratulations to all three for making it to Ayr this year! |

How
does he do it? Allan Mitchell
wins another one day competition! This time with the able
support of Sadie Gould and Bill Wallace when the three secured Stewart
Martin's one day mixed triples competition. However, Bill may

wife Margaret along with Peter Rutherford and Jack Hurry were beaten

Its
been all quiet on the Western front for a
while, but stop press Clarkston have secured their 1st silverware for
2007 with Derek Pilkington, Russell Graham, the unknown bowler and Ian
Hudson (pictured below) winning the Busby Centenary Cup. The
4th member of the rink wishes to remain anonymous for tax reasons.

Internally
the Blackwood Shield was won by the
pairing of Joyce Crombie and Alan Mitchell pictured below.
The pairing won this years event by using surprise tactics.
Having a good laugh and putting bowls closer to the jack than normal
(Well Alan was reported to have drawn to within a yard which happens as
frequently as Halley's comet).

Many
thanks to Hugh McGhee for the
photo's! Next time you photograph Russell can you
please take one of his better side.

In
last weeks SBA and GBA competitions both
Clarkston's representatives, Ali Shan & Ian Hudson, progressed
to the next round. In the GBA U'45's confusion
reigned. Clarkston beat Busby @ Stamperland, but only time
will tell if their efforts are to have any meaning.
Best
of luck to the seniors for today's final!

Clarkston's Senior Top Ten have qualified for this years Cathcart Top

where Clarkston will hope to put one over on their final opponents. |

Clarkston's
defence of the Hillpark League
suffered a further setback with both home and away teams losing for the
second consecutive week. With only two weeks of the league
played Clarkston may already be out of the running.
In
this years Eaglesham Fair trophy Clarkston,
last years winners, suffered a heavy defeat to Stamperland.
So Clarkston not only returned the trophy but also managed to loose the
trophy! If President John was looking to match Jack's
"magnificent seven" last years then things will need to
improve. (John was part of the Eaglesham four)
Hopefully
next week will see an upturn in
fortune for Clarkston!

In
the preliminary round of this years GBA
pairs Willie Paul and Russell Graham were narrowly beaten by 3 shots
with their opponents from Croftfoot progressing. |
|
8th May |
The
preliminary round of this year's RBA
Competitions saw Clarkston's Craig Bolling defeated 21 - 19 by
Wellcroft's Mark Campbell at Eaglesham. It was a hard fought
encounter with players struggling to master a difficult rink.
However, four immaculate bowls from Mark on the last end were
sufficient to secure his place in the first round. |

6th May |
Clarkston
will again provide players to the
Renfrewshire Bowling Association following the selection of Ali Shan
and Iain Hunter at this year's trial matches at Wellmeadow and Paisley

Last
night saw the start of this years Hillpark
League. Clarkston, the holders, got the defence of their
title of to a very poor start with both teams defeated. At
home Ian Hudson's rink (J. Hurry, R. Downs & R. Graham) were
five up with two to play but surrendered a two and a four to
Pollokshaws which saw the away team secure the three points.
At Eaglesham, Peter Cation's rink (W. Paul, A. Weir & J.
Purcell) fought back from a poor start to lie game with only one bowl
to come. Fortune shone on the Eaglesham skip as he promoted a
short bowl into the head to take the points for Eaglesham. |

Clarkston
started the season on the front foot
with all five rinks winning in the traditional opening friendly fixture
against Queens Park, Craig Bolling's rink of Willie Paul, Malcolm

margin. The overall score was 109 - 71, which was only
secured in the latter stages as Queens Park were level after 13 ends. |

June |
Its
been a good while since the last update, other matters taking
precedence, so I'll try and quickly go over the latest results in what
has been a period of mixed fortune.
Friday
night saw Clarkston, who were leading
the Hillpark league, crash to defeat both home and away. So
this weeks teams face the task of putting Clarkston's challenge back on
the rails.
In
Saturday's RBA County Cup Clarkston were 58
shots to the good, mainly thanks to Ian Hudson's impressive 33 shot
victory, with Jim Meer's rink (Craig Milliken, Malcolm McLaren and
Craig Bolling) result to come. It was though a disastrous 21
shot defeat for this rink which cost Clarkston a repeat of last years
win. The winning shots total was 51 up with Clarkston
finishing 3rd. Ian's rink have some consolation in winning
the Hall trophy for the highest up rink.
Pride
of place goes to Chico Quershi,
Malcolm Burns and Peter Cation who won the RBA Triples at Charlestown
on Sunday with a narrow 3 shot victory. A win made more
satisfying by coming back from a 6 shot loss in the 1st end.
With Peter playing a number of telling bowls throughout Clarkston
fought back well. So that's a GBA title in 2005 and an RBA
title in 2006, any offers for 2007? This means
Clarkston have won this trophy for 2 out of the last 3 years.
Sunday
also saw the district semi-finals and
final of this years SBA Mixed Pairs. The Clarkston duet of
Liz and Alex Fraser had a comfortable semi-final win over Croftfoot,
last years winners! However, the final saw the
Kingswood pairing, Mr & Mrs Boyle< progress to the
inter-district stage with an impressive display.
In the
GBA Cup on Tuesday Clarkston recorded a
105 - 39 victory over the visitors with Craig Bolling's rink of Alan
Mitchell, Ken MacBride and Peter Cation contributing 40
shots. With 8 shots added because Victoria Park failed to
appear we have a 74 shot victory which puts usin with a good chance of
securing yet another trophy for 2006. Will advise ASAP.
In the
GBA Millennium triples Croftfoot were to
progress with a 2 - 1 victory over a strong Clarkston team. A
close fought match ended with Jim Meer's opponent securing the vital
win with a fluke on the last end. The only winning triple
being Graham Kerr's (Alex Weir and Russell Graham).
|
|
18th
June |
It
was mixed fortunes this week for Clarkston's remaining association
teams. On Tuesday night the RBA triples team of Chico
Quershi, Malcolm Burns and Peter Cation progressed to this year's final
at Charlestown Bowling Club where they will face Ian Cowan's triples
from Meikleriggs.
On
Thursday night both the singles and pairs
were to fall at the district final. In the singles, Craig
Bolling was defeated 21 - 12 by Alastair Dick from
Rutherglen. Better weight and drawing from the Rutherglen man
saw him secure an early lead which Craig was unable to reel
in. In the pairs, Roy Hall and Ken Murchie gave as good as
they got in the early stages and it required a burst in the middle
section to see the Kingswood pair return to Ayr five years after their
Championship winning run of 2001.
|
|
9th
June |
In
this years annual cup night Clarkston won all their matches.
However, only the rink of Willie Paul, Alex Fraser, Malcolm Burns and
Jim Meechan were successful in securing any silverware. They
were able to secure the Thornliebank Jubilee Trophy and provide
Clarkston with their third piece of silverware for 2006.
In the
GBA U45's the rink of Stuart Law, Allan
Mitchell, Gordon Andrew and Craig Bolling progressed to this years
semi-finals with a hard fought one shot (17 - 16) victory over their
counterparts from Eaglesham.
Clarkston
will face Rutherglen in the District
singles final and the 2001 Scottish Champions from Kingswood in the
pairs this coming Thursday at Farme.
|
|
8th
June |
Extra
ends! Clarkston this week saw three ties go to an extra
end. On Tuesday it was the RBA pairs and triples.
The pairs lost out but the triples of won through to next weeks
semi-final. On Thursday the SBA pairs also went to an extra
end, and with good fortune achieved the same result as the RBA
triples. On the same green Clarkston's singles had a more
comfortable win over his Giffnock opponent. |
|
3rd
June |
In
last nights GBA under 45,s the rink of Stewart Law, Allan Mitchell,
Gordon Andrew and Craig Bolling progressed to the the quarter final
stage with a convincing win over their Kingswood opponents.
In the East Renfrewshire Clarkston had mixed fortunes with 2 wins, 1
draw and 1 defeat. |
|
2nd
June |
In
this weeks Scottish District matches there were mixed fortunes for
Clarkson's entries. The triples were narrowly defeated by
Eaglesham whilst the fours also lost. On the brighter side
the pairing of Roy Hall and skip Ken Murchie had a convincing win over
last years district winners from Wellcroft (Andrew Sneddon &
Alex Ross) at Mount Florida. In the singles Craig Bolling
fought of a strong comeback from Martin Bain, who was also last years
district winner to secure a 21 - 18 victory. Both the pairs
and singles play at Castlemilk next week.
Other
results from Mount Florida saw wins for
Rutherglen in the Junior Singles, Croftfoot in the triples
and Kirkhill in the fours.
Clarkston
also had a Hillpark League
tie against Kingston which was won with a convincing 20+ shots
margin. To date Clarkston have dropped only 3 points in the
league and are well placed.

Unfortunately
Ali's excellent run in the Glasgow Singles came to an end
with a narrow defeat 21-20 to local rival Peter Queen of Giffnock.
After a great comeback from 12-3 down Ali led 20-16, however Peter
produced some telling bowls to snatch victory. Some excellent bowling
was produced by both bowlers and it was a pity there had to be a loser.

On
Tuesday the Renfrewshire Bowling Association ties saw both the
Clarkston Pairs and Triples progress to the quarter finals at
Priorscroft and Hawkhead. The pairs of Alex Weir and Ian
Hudson (Skip) defeated Mount Florida 19 - 10 whilst the triples of
Chico Quershi, Malcolm Burns and Peter Cation comprehensively defeated
Busby 21 -3. Best of luck to both teams next week.

|
30th
May |
On
Monday night the 1st internal honours were settled with the rink of
Gavin Templeton, Ross McGhee, Ali Shan and Graham Kerr narrowly
defeating Jim Meechans rink of Dan Adams, Hugh Nelson and Russell
Graham. This means Graham retains the title he secured last
year, though it took a lucky wick in the last end to do so. |
|
14th
May |
Friday
Night saw Clarkston capture their 1st silverware of the
season. In the Eaglesham Fairs trophy the rink of Jim
Patrick, Jack Hurry, Gavin Templeton and John Harrison defeated a
strong Giffnock rink skipped by Andy Burt by 15 shots.
In the
Hillpark league a strong finish from the
Clarkston home rink enabled them to see of Stamperland and secure a
further two points. However, the away team were unable to
complete a perfect start to the Hillpark League and were narrowly
defeated.
Saturday
saw the 1st social function for 2006

year. There is a Karaoke Night coming sup in July so all the
budding singers can treat us to a rendition of their favourite songs.

May |
The
season is now well under way and the Clarkston Seniors started where
they left off last year with a resounding 8 - 0 win in the 1st round of
this years Cathcart Top Ten. All the best for next week!
Tonight
saw the start of this years Mitchell
Fours with both 1st round ties going down to the last end. In
the match between skips Graham Kerr and Craig Bolling a run of seven
ends without reply saw the former progress to the next round.
In the other tie a remarkable comeback from Ian Hudson's rink saw them
through to the next round to face Graham Kerr's rink.
This
week sees the start of the annual
association competitions and our best wishes go to all Clarkston's
representatives, in particular Ali Shan who plays his prelim round of
the Glasgow singles at Darnley on Wednesday night.

Last
night saw the start of the Hillpark League for 2006. With
Clarkston aiming to repeat the success of 2004, a winning start was
made by both the home and away teams against Mearns and Giffnock
respectively. Whilst the home game was a narrow victory the
away team secured a comfortable winning margin. Its amazing
what a change in manager can make! |

second was nearly a toucher. The tennis courts were opened by
Mark Weir whose partner Katie got the year of to the perfect start with
an ace on court 4. Our best wishes to all for this season and

In
today's Murchie Cup final Ali Shan defeated Jim Meers 7 - 2, 7 - 4 to
complete a remarkable season in which he has claimed all available
singles trophies with the exception of the Presidents. This
means that Malcolm McLaren is the only person to defeat Ali in the
knockout stages of any singles.

Singles:

Pairs:

Its
a double for George Valentine as he and
George Ashton win this years Senior Pairs with a comfortable win over
President Bill Skinner and Bill Blanchflower. George had
earlier won the Senior singles title.
In the
U45's final Gordan Andrew gained a small
measure of revenge over Stewart Law, who beat him earlier in the season
in both the major singles competitions, with a straight sets victory 7
-2, 7-2.
The
Stewart Martin singles league was won this
morning by new champion Ali Shan with a 10 - 5 victory over John Sadler.
The
destination of the remaining silverware for
2005 will be decided tomorrow when Jim Meers and Ali Shan play the

For
your information I can advise that Ardgowan, who defeated Clarkston
last week in the RBA Top Ten, defeated Ferguslie by one shot in the
semi-final. They will play Paisley Victoria who beat
Blacklandmill in the semi-final held at Clarkston on Sunday.
The
completion of last weeks postponed Hilpark
semi-finals saw Clarkston's last hopes of a finalist fall following
defeat by Busby. The Clarkston triple of Stewart Law, Jim
Meechan & Ian Hudson were unable to pull back their opponents
lead.
|
|
1st
September |
Last
night saw Clarkston's top five singles progress to the semi-finals of
this years GBA competition following a 3 - 2 win over
Titwood. Graham Kerr got Clarkston of to a flying start with
an emphatic 21 - 4 win over this years GBA singles champion,
Robert Moles. Jim Meers backed this up with a comfortable 21
- 8 over his opponent. With Clarkston's Championship
finalists struggling against their opponents the pressure was Jim
Meechan to win his match against John Boyd. With this at 19 -
19 Jim drew the two shots required to give Clarkston the 3
points required. Ali & Craig were able to
concede their ties.
The
semi-final is to played this coming
Wednesday at Sandyhills.
What
a finish to
the finals match for the President's Trophy between Laura Meechan and
Cathie Muir: the very two who gave us such a great game last
week for the Championship. There was Cathie lying
shot right on the jack with her first bowl, Laura has three attempts to
shift it and Cathie with her last bowl moves the jack
backwards - exactly what Laura had been trying to do - a gasp
from the spectators and from Cathie herself as she comes running up the
green. But don't we bowlers know all about the
merits of a back bowl - Cathie had one and Laura two but Cathie lay
with her back bowl and that clinched the match as Laura's last
bowl did not get any nearer.
Congratulations
to
Cathie!
Thanks

In
tonights Nominated Fours final Jim Meer's rink of Derek Pilkington,
Robert Downs and Alex Weir defeated Craig Bolling's rink of Allan
Mitchell, Ross McGhee and Gordon Andrews 17 - 14. With Jim's
last bowl at the the 7th end securing 6 shots to move out to 9 - 4 lead
Craig's rink had to work hard to go into the last end 15 - 14
down. With shot against Craig's penultimate bowl struck the
jack, only to see it rebound up the rink, Jim then drew within 8 inch's
to win the game.
In the
Stewart Martin Singles league the holder
John Sadler had a comfortable win over Roy Hall. He will now
play the new Club Champion, Ali Shan in this years final following his
defeat of Ian Hudson. The final is scheduled for Saturday
morning at 10:00.
In the
Hillpark league Clarkston are out of the
rink competition as they are down with 11 ends played. Hopes
now rest with the triples who resume their game with Busby on Friday
night with five ends to play.

Yesterdays Finals day saw the destination of
the four major prizes for 2005. Firstly in the Championship
Ali Shan saw of Craig Bolling 21 - 19 in a close fought match that
could have gone either way. Ali started quickly moving into a
5 - 1 lead but was reined in to 5 - 7, however he recovered and pushed
out to a 15 - 9 lead. Craig rallied again to move into an 18
- 15 lead after 16 ends. Ali though went on to win 5 of the
last 6 ends including save a Championship lie in the penultimate end.
The
Presidents final was a one side affair
with Jim Meechan running out a comfortable 21 - 7 win over Graham Kerr
on what was clearly a tricky rink.
The Vice
Presidents final was an equally one
side affair with Andy Agnew winning 21 - 6 over Bill
Blanchflower. This was Andy's third appearance in this final
so obviously it was third time lucky. I get the impression
that he may be quite pleased with himself.
The
Nominated Pairs saw Ken Murchie and Roy
Hall complete a phenomenal year with Ken adding this to his earlier SBA
District win and Roy completing an impressive hatrick of GBA
Seniors, Club & Nom Pairs. Against the 2003 winners,
Gordon Andrew & Iain Hunter, the early exchanges were even with
the score at 5 - 3 after four ends. However, 10 shot over the
next 4 ends saw Ken & Roy move into control and move out to win
22 - 13 after 16 ends.
In the
Seniors Singles final George Valentine
retained the Bill Drummond trophy. I am advised that should
he win it for three years running he is obliged to
take it home. It was a one sided match against Roy Hall and
George was never under any pressure.

In
last nights Hillpark Knock out competition
none of the games in which Clarkston had representation were
completed. These have now all been scheduled for next
week. All three teams are currently trailing the competition
but are still in with a chance of progressing. At
Thornliebank, Robert Moles of Titwood is through to the singles final
to play either John Sadler or Andy Hargan of Hillpark.

The
Club Pairs final tonight was a close fought match despite Roy Hall
(Runner Up in 2004) and Alex Weir (Winner 2004) racing to a 15 - 1 lead
after 9 ends. Hamish Orr & Jim Meechan fought hard to
claw the match back to 17 - 14 going into the last end.
However, Roy & Alex survived this late surge to win this years
first major Club Trophy. No doubt Hugh McGhee will provide
the photo's in due course.
In the
Senior Singles semi-final the holder
George Valentine moved a step closer to retaining the Bill Drummond
trophy with a 15 - 7 win over last years runner-up. He now
faces Roy Hall in the final, and the winner will have the privilege of
placing this magnificent trophy on their mantelpiece for twelve
months. Final to be played this Sunday evening the 28th of
August.
Gordon
Andrew won his semi-final against Craig
Bolling 7 - 6, 7 - 5 in a close fought match. The two matched
each other bowl for bowl, but Gordon was to win through to play Stewart
Law for the 3rd time this season. Third time lucky?

This
afternoon Cathie Muir and Laura Meechan played an excellent game in the
final match for the Ladies Championship. After a
two hour marathon Laura won through, lying two shots and not playing
her last bowl. On the adjacent rink Jeanette
Johnston was successful in retaining the Jean Muir Trophy, which she
had won last year, against Ina Valentine.
Thanks
To Moira Keane for the above update.
Congratulations
to Laura Meechan on
winning this years Ladies Championship, and I suspect that
the Presidents final between Laura and Cathie will be as equally hard
fought.

Clarkston
have progressed to the quarter finals of this years GBA five singles
following a narrow 3 - 2 victory over Stepps at Giffnock.
With super sub Jim Meechan winning 21 - 4 and Graham Kerr 21 - 13
Clarkston were well on the way to victory. However, Jim Meers
lost 21 - 20 and with Craig Bolling trailing trailing 18 - 10 the
pressure was on Ali to win the tie for Clarkston. Craig went
on to lose 21 - 13 but Ali made sure with some excellent bowls in the
last two ends to win 21- 18. As a side note Craig &
Ali were playing this years Championship finalists for Stepps. |

Tonight
saw the last round of the Nominated Fours league games. In
section 1 a 25 - 10 win for Craig Bolling's rink of Allan Mitchell,
Ross McGhee and Gordon Andrew saw them overhaul Ian Hudson's rink to
secure a final against Jim Meers (skip), Derek Pilkington, Robert Downs
and Alec Weir. This game to be played on Tuesday the 30th of
August.
In the
remaining Section 2 game Ken Murchie won
17 - 4 after twelve ends. With nothing at stake the two teams
rightly adjourned to the bar.
Feedback
would indicate that this format was
enjoyed by all and if an eighth team had entered this could have added
meaning to the last section 2 game. for final
league placings.

Clarkston
lost 6 - 2 to Ardgowan in the quarter final of this years RBA Top Ten
at Ralston. In the singles Craig Bolling lost 21 - 16 to
Dougie Barr, this was a crucial win for Ardgowan as a loss here would
have Clarkston some hope. With the pairs and triples losing
13 - 19 and 12 - 15 respectively. The only Clarkston success
was the re-shuffled rink, skipped by Jim Meechan, who won 24 -
17. Our best wishes to Ardgowan for next weeks semi-final at
Blacklandmill.
On a
brighter note I can confirm that Clarkston
have won this years RBA Centenary Cup with the rink of Mike Hudson, Jim
Meechan, Ian Hudson & Jim Meers. This completes an
impressive double in the RBA having already won the County Cup.
|
|
20th
August |
In
this years friendly against local rivals Giffnock, Clarkston recorded
an exceptional 125 - 48 victory. The highest up Clarkston
rink was Malcolm McLaren, John Burns, Stuart Law and Ian Hudson with a
23 shot margin. The lowest down Giffnock rink was Arthur
Miller, Allan Coventry, Roy Wyllie and Ian Crawford who
restrained Jim Meechan to a 16 - 14 win. Irrespective of the
score I trust that all enjoyed their afternoons bowling! |
|
19th
August |
In
the final for this years Senior Pairs George Ashton & George
Valentine will play Bill Skinner & Bill Blanchflower following
the latter pairings semi-final victory.
The
club was again in action in the Hillpark
Knock-out competition with all three remaining teams progressing to the
semi-finals. In the singles John Sadler won 21 - 19 at
Stamperland and will now play Hillpark's Andy Hargan at Newlands next
Friday. The triples of Stuart Law, Jim Meechan and Ian Hudson
had a comfortable win over their opponents from Whitecraigs despite
trailing 6 - 0 early on and will play at Thornliebank next
Friday. Like John in the singles the rink made heavy weather
of their game against Stamperland at Whitecraigs. Leading by
three shots going into the last the Stamperland skip, Davie Warren,
played an excellent chap and lie to give Stamperland a match winning
position. However, this well matched by skip Ken Murchie and
he together with Robert Doodson, Robert Downs and Craig Bolling will
play at Thornliebank next Friday.

Tonight's
Nominated Pairs Semi Final was a close fought affair between Gordon
Andrew & Iain Hunter against Allan Mitchell and Craig
Bolling. The former pairing raced to a 9 - 0 lead after 4
ends only to be clawed back to 17 - 15 going into the last end, mainly
due to some first class leading from Allan Mitchell. Lying
game against, Iain played a well weighted backhand shot to not only
deny his opponents the shot but win the end. Roy Hall and Ken
Murchie will now face Gordon and Iain in this years final.
The
latter should be congratulated for their
third successive final appearance.

|
17th
August |
Two
semi finals were played tonight, first a close encounter between
defending champion Alan Mitchell and Stuart Law in the U45s.
Stuart
looked to be winning comfortably taking the 1st set 7-0 and an early
lead in 2nd set, until Alan found his weight and won the 2nd set
7-2.
In a close fought 3rd set Stuart did enough to win. Stuart
now faces
Gordon Andrew or Craig Bolling in this years final.
In the
balloted pairs semi Alex Weir and Roy
Hall had a comfortable win over Bill Blanchflower and George Valentine
to ensure both Alex & Roy reached pairs final 2 years in a row
but this year as a pairing.
Thanks
To Gordon Andrew for the above update.
In the
GBA Five single Clarkston had a
convincing 4 - 1 win to move into the last sixteen of this years
competition. Ali Shan drew first blood with a an excellent 21
- 6 win, this was backed up by Jim Meers and Graham Kerr.
With the match secured Craig Bolling went on to win 21 - 16 and Ian
Hunter narrowly lost 21 - 18 despite lying game in the penultimate
end. Clarkston's top 5 now face Stepps at Giffnock next
Wednesday.
|
|
16th
August |
Following
tonight's results Jim Meers rink of Derek Pilkington, Robert Downs and
Alex Weir have ensured a final place, despite a well fought match from
their lesser fancied opponents who nearly overturned the section
favourites. Trailing 11 - 8 after 11ends and the game on a
knife edge Jims rink won a six and looked comfortable from there on.
In the
other section a six shot win for Ian
Hudson's rink puts them in control of the section but with all to play
for in the last week as 3 out of 4 teams can still progress following
Craig Bolling's rink win over John Sadler.
|
|
15th
August |
Following
the penultimate Monday night aggregate game, Ian Hudson has retained
his lead over closest rival John Sadler. However, it is all
to play for next week as John could still overhaul Ian who has led for
most of this season.
Wednesday
nights GBA five singles has been
switched from Partick to Stepps, where Clarkston will play Kelvindale.

14th
August |
In
yesterdays RBA Centenary Cup the Clarkston rink of Mike Hudson, Jim
Meechan, Ian Hudson and Jim Meers recorded a 20 shot plus victory over
Kilmacolm at Ferguslie.
In
today's RBA Top Ten Clarkston
recorded an 8 - 0 win over over Priorscroft at Abercorn.
Considering the previous weeks narrow victories this was certainly a
big improvement from Clarkston. The pairs of Alex Weir and
Ian Hudson got Clarkston of to a flyer with a comprehensive win this
allied with a 21 - 16 win in the singles put Clarkston well in
control. The rink skipped by Jim Meers recorded their first
win and the triples fought back well from a sluggish start to overhaul
their opponents. Next weeks game is at Ralston.
|
|
13th
August |
In
the Quarter Final of this years Stamperland VP's competition
Clarkston's representative Chico Quershi lost out 21 - 20 to his
opponent from Busby. Going into the last end at 20 - 20 Chico
lay three shots until his opponents last bowl picked up the
jack. Chico's was unable to retrieve the situation with his
last bowl. In Chico's favour he got further than Ali
in this competition. |
|
12th
August |
In
a busy schedule tonight Clarkston had four teams out in the Clydesdale
Association together with representatives in the Hillpark knock-out
competition.
In the
former Clarkston had two rinks up
(Gordon Andrew +18 and Jim Meers +10) this combined with + 8 for Graham
Kerr's rink due to the non appearance of Nitshill & Hurlett put
Clarkston in good stead. However, in the remaining rink
skipped by John Harrison Clarkston were to drop 11 shots. Overall,
a good result with a plus 25 margin.
In the
knockout section of the Hillpark League
Clarkston enjoyed a mixed bag of results. In the singles John
Sadler bounced back well from last night's disappointment to record a
21 - 13 win over Darnley. Both the triples and rink
join John in the next round following 18 - 8 and 22 - 10
victories over Wellcroft and Newlands respectively. The
Senior Fours lost 20 - 19 to local rivals Newland despite being well up
at one stage and the Pair were to also loose 18 - 16 to Titwood.
It has
come to my attention that Bill Skinner
and Bill Blanchflower are through to this years Senior Pairs
final. I hadn't noticed this result until tonight, but well
done to both.
|
|
11th
August |
Tonight's
Championship Semi-Final saw a tremendous fight back from Ali Shan to
overhaul a commanding 18 - 6 lead John Sadler had built. John
fought hard to push home his advantage and saved game in the
penultimate end to make the score 19 - 19. He was lying game
until Ali's last bowl clipped the 2nd shot and ran on to put Ali into
the final to face Craig Bolling.
In the
Club Pairs Hamish Orr and Jim Meechan
progressed to the final with a comfortable victory over opponents
George Ashton and John Harrison. They await the winners of
Roy Hall & Alec Weir agains Bill Blanchflower and George
Valentine.
Earlier
this week Roy Hall won his semi-final
against John Crombie in the Senior Singles.

Last
Friday the Tennis Section organised a very successful Juniors Night and

advised that the burgers were top class. |

Last
night saw the start of this years Nominated Fours Competition in the
new league format. In section 1 Ian Hudson's rink survived a
mid game surge from the 2003 champions skipped by John Sadler to secure
a comfortable win. In the other section 1 game Graham Kerr's
rink, skipped by Alex Fraser secured all three points with a 6 point
win over their opponents. The section 2 match up of Jim Meers
and Ken Murchie proved a close encounter with the former recovering
from an 11 - 1 deficit to record a 1 shot victory.
In
tonight's Glasgow 5-Singles Clarkston
secured their place in the next round at Partick BC with a 5 - 0 win
over their opponents from Dromoyne. Comfortable wins from
Graham Kerr and Ali Shan together with an excellent fight back from Jim
Meers ensured a good victory.

draw for this years Nominated Fours can be found by clicking
here. This will be posted tomorrow night in the
club. Malcolm, is that quick enough?
The
final league positions can be found on the

Cardonald and Eaglesham. Whilst falling short of last years
excellent achievement I think this is a great effort from those that
took part.

In
the Hillpark knockout competitions Clarkston's Senior Fours got the
club of to a good start with victory over their local rivals, Busby, on
Friday.
In the
RBA Top Ten it was another nail biter as
Clarkston progressed to the 2nd round with a 1 shot victory over
Pollokshaws at Nitshill and Hurlet. Wins in the singles and
pairs secured 4 points for Clarkston and this was to prove enough to
put Clarkston through.

This
years Murchie Cup final will be between Ali Shan and Jim Meers
following the latters comprehensive win over Jim Purcell. In
a very one sided affair Jim Meers cruised to victory as Jim Purcell
never caught the weight. |

August |
In
the Championship semi final tonight both Ian Hudson and Craig Bolling
played below recent form. This made for a close fought
contest which ended with Craig securing two shots in the last end to
squeeze by with a 21- 18 win. Craig now awaits the winner of
Ali Shan and John Sadler from the other semi-final which is scheduled
for Thursday the 11th.
In the
Vice Presidents semi final between Bill
Blanchflower and Donald Davidson the latter never got out the starting
blocks, allowing Bill to run out a comfortable winner. Bill
now faces last years runner-up Andy Agnew in this years VP final.
In the
over 45's Ali Shan made short work of
Gavin Templeton winning the 1st set 7 - 0 in two ends. Whilst
Gavin pressed hard in the second set Ali was to win this 7 - 5 and
progress to the final where he plays either Jim Meers or Jim Purcell.
|
|
2nd
August |
In
tonight's semi-finals Jim Meechan recorded a good win over Stuart
Law. With Stuart starting the stronger Jim was made to work
hard early on but eventually ran out a comfortable winner.
Jim, champion in 2000, now faces another previous champion in Graham
Kerr in this years Presidents final.
In the
Nomination Pairs, Roy Hall and Ken
Murchie progressed to the final with an impressive victory over the
holders, holding a 5 shot lead going into the last. Defending
champions Alec Weir and Jim Purcell were also chasing from the start
and couldn't counter some strong leading from Roy and Kens conversion
shots.
In the
Blackwood Final (Mixed Triples),
President Bill Skinner backed up some earlier victories in 2005
partnered by Cathie Muir and Craig Bolling (Skip) when he secured this
years Blackwood Shield. In a tight contest the winners edged
out their opponents Hugh Nelson, Laura Meechan and John Harrison (Skip)
with victory in an extra end.

In
the preliminary round of this years RBA Top Ten Clarkston scraped by
with the narrowest of margins, 1 shot! In the singles Craig
Bolling threw away a 12 - 5 margin to loose 21 - 12. This
made what looked like a comfortable victory for Clarkston all the
harder. However, both the triples (Skip Graham Kerr) and
pairs (Skip - Hudson) recorded victories and allied with the rinks
(Skip Jim Meers) two shots at the last end means Clarkston escaped to
victory. (No pun intended) |

tonight's President's semi-final Graham Kerr defeated Craig Bolling 21
- 18 to progress to this years final. Graham started the
stronger and raced to a 9 - 0 lead and better weight control throughout
ensured victory despite a fight back from Craig. Graham now
awaits the winner of Stuart Law & Jim Meechan.
In the
Hillpark League Clarkston won their last
home game by a comfortable 20 - 10 margin. The rink of Roy
Hall, George Valentine, Jim Meechan and Ian Hudson were in control from
the first end despite some close 1 shot exchanges in the middle section
of the game.

At

Clarkston
secured victories both home and away in tonight's Hillpark League
fixtures. The home team of Roy Hall, George Valentine, Jim
Meechan and Ian Hudson had a comfortable 18 - 12 win at home over their
opponents from Newlands. The away team (Malcolm MacLaren,
Alex Weir, Craig Bolling & Jim Meers) had a narrow 1 shot
victory over Fairfield in a hard fought contest which was secured with
Jims last bowl.
Congratulations

Clarkston's
seniors completed a very successful 2005 with a comfortable 53 - 32
shot victory over their local rivals at Mearns. Whilst not
the strongest team to venture out representing Clarkston they were to
prove to strong for their counterparts, with George Valentine's rink
highest up following a last end count of five.
Congratulations are due to Roy Hall for his 1st season in charge! |

In
the annual friendly match at Busby Clarkston recorder an 83 - 38 shot
victory over their hosts, with three teams up and one match
drawn. Jim Meechan's triple of John Burns and Mike Hudson
claimed the highest up slot with a 17 shot winning margin.
The only drawn match was that between Craig Bolling and Reg McDougall. |
|
15th
July |
Whilst
Clarkston's chances of retaining the Hillpark League are slim the Club
maintained its challenge with good wins at home to Thornliebank and
away to Busby. The home game was close at 11 - 9 for
Clarkston, but a late surge from the Clarkson four skipped by John
Sadler saw them run out winners by nine shots. At Busby the
rink skipped by Graham Kerr were never troubled and secured a 16 point
win.
Clarkston's
Seniors secured the double over
local neighbours Whitecraigs with a narrow away victory. The
highest up rink was Clarkston B who recorded a moral boosting win prior
to Ayr Northfield. I am advised that this is the 1st
Clarkston win for a number years and means that is the Seniors win
against the Mearns they will have 100% record for 2005.
|
|
12th
July |
In
the annual club match against Whitecraigs at Clarkston the home team
earned a +23 shot victory with two rinks up and two down. The
win was due in the most part to a 19 shot victory for Jim Meechan's
rink of John Crombie, Robert Downs and John Sadler. The two
losing Clarkston rinks skipped by Craig Bolling and Ken Murchie were
both only 2 shots down. However, it was Ken Murchie's rink
who gave the "money away" due to winning fewer ends. No doubt
Whitecraigs will be looking for revenge in the Seniors Match this
Friday! |

This
years Bank Of Scotland Triples proved a lively and enjoyable event with
the only losers being those that weren't there. The final was
contested between the triples of Jack Hurry, Hamish Orr & Ken
Murchie against Alex Shaw, Donald Davidson & Stuart
Law. Despite facing two national finalists, sporting crisp
white shoes, the latter were to run out victorious and undefeated for
the day. It's a great achievement for Alex "as a part time
member" to humble such vaunted opponents.
Our
sincere thanks to John Sadler for a great
day!

The
Clarkston senior fours of Roy Hall, Tom Devine, John Sadler
and Peter Cation secured the GBA Senior Fours title with an
extra end victory over Springburn. Skip Peter Cation and
third John Sadler combined well to keep Clarkston in the match with
John's first bowl at the extra end being enough to bring a GBA title to
Clarkston for the second consecutive year.
The
singles title was won by Titwood's Robert
Moles, this is Roberts third success in the GBA Champion of Champions
tournament.
Other
winners included: - Junior Single:
Victoria Park; Triples: Pollokshaws, Rink: Kelvindale
In the
Intercounty cup the Clarkson rink of
Mike Hudson, Andy Agnew, Alec Weir & Ian Hudson recorded a 20
shot victory. They were the highest up Renfrewshire rink,
though this was not enough to prevent the Intercounty cup going to a
Dumbartonshire rink.

The
completion of this years annual "cup night" saw Clarkston claiming
Stamperland's Ferguson Trophy for the first time since 1992 with the
rink of George Anderson, Andy Agnew, Mike Hudson & Ian Hudson
returning with the club's first silverware for 2005.
It was
a narrow miss at home too, following a
tie on both shots and ends between Eaglesham and Clarkston for the
Kessel Cup at Clarkston. A play off between each clubs skips
under the "golden bowl" saw Eaglesham capture the trophy from holders
Clarkston.
The
same night saw Clarkston's under 45 GBA
rink fall victim to a strong Croftfoot rink skipped by Martin
Bain. A tricky rink, Kirkhill, was mastered early on by the
Croftfoot four who built up a commanding lead in the early stages,
which was well protected. Croftfoot now progress to the
semi-finals of a competition held by south-east clubs for the last
three years; Croftfoot, Clarkston & Rutherglen respectively.
